One Hundred Famous Views of Edo: Sannō Festival Procession at Kōji-machi 1-chōme
Painted by Utagawa Hiroshige I 1856 (Ansei 3) Tokyo Shiryō Collection 331-C14

The annual grand festival of the Hie Sannō Daigongen-sha (present-day Hie Shrine) which was held on June 15 is the Sannō Festival. The procession would be viewed by the shogun in the Edo Castle. The only festival processions which were permitted to pass through the castle were this Sannō Festival and the Kanda Festival, and for this reason the two of them were known as the "Tenka Matsuri (festival of the realm)".
