This work depicts one of the scenes of "The Pregnant Mountain Ogres (Komochi Yamanba)", which was created by Chikamatsu Monzaemon and performed at the show with an all-star cast at the Ichimuraza theater in 1812 (Bunka 9).

Sawamura Sōjūrō, from a distinguished kabuki family that still exists today, played a hero, Sakata no Kurando.
The costumes worn by kabuki actors like this were the model of the Edo residents' fashion. Moreover, because prints of kabuki actors were available at a lower price, such appearances of kabuki actors spread quickly among common people.
Popular fashion that originated in kabuki includes "Edo Murasaki (Edo Purple)", the color of a headband worn by Sukeroku; and the pattern of "Kama-Wa-Nu (I do not care)" combining "Kama (sickle)", "Wa (ring)" and "Nu", which Ichikawa Danjūrō often used. Ichimatsu moyō (checked pattern) that can be seen often even today originated in the costume that Sanogawa Ichimatsu wore on the stage.
