Shadow Series, New Edition (Shinpan Kageboshi-zukushi)(reprduction)
Painted by Utagawa Hiroshige I Tokyo Shiryō Collection 5896-C1

Like the "Impromtu Shadow Series", this is also a kage-e painted by Utagawa Hiroshige I. It depicts a person who makes shadows of many people in different occupations using his hands and small gadgets. The term, "tekage-e", refers to the shadow pictures casted on shōji doors in the shape of different objects such as dogs and cats using a person's hand(s). This is an excellent example of kage-e in which a daruma doll and a boatman were expressed with a person's hands and gadgets.
