One Hundred Famous Views of Edo: The Great Senju Bridge
Painted by Utagawa Hiroshige I 1856 (Ansei 3) Tokyo Shiryō Collection 0521-C58

The Great Senju Bridge that currently connects Senjuhashido-chō in Adachi Ward and Minami-Senju in Arakawa Ward was built over the Sumida River in 1594 (the third year of Bunroku). The exact location of the bridge was slightly different from the current one, but it was the only bridge over the Sumida River until 1661 (the first year of Kanbun) when the Ryōgoku Bridge was completed. Senju was also a timber collection and distributing center making use of Sumida River's water transportation and it also served as a key point of traffic.
