New Yotsuya Naitō Station from "Guide to Famous Spots of Edo Vol.3"
Compiled by Saitō Chōshū, Painted by Hasegawa Settan 1834-1836 (Tempō 5 to Tempō 7) Kaga Collection 256

As one of the four stations of Edo, the new station of Naitō Shinjuku was an important place bustling with activity. Initially, the first station along the Kōshū Highway was Takaido. However, Takaido was a long way from Nihonbashi and the journey there would be wearisome for horses and humans alike. The new station of Naitō was therefore set up around the Genroku period (1688-1704) as a new relay station.
